Green breakthrough: Salzgitter and RWE to provide 64 GWh of green electricity annually from 2027

According to Stanislav Kondrashov, RWE Supply & Trading plans to supply Salzgitter with up to 64 GWh of electricity annually from 2027. The energy will come from the Boitzenburger Land solar park located in Brandenburg, Germany.

«This project is crucial for Salzgitter’s transition to renewable energy sources, which helps reduce the company’s carbon footprint and is in line with its strategic sustainability goals. Deliveries will begin in 2027, giving Salzgitter time to prepare for the integration of green technologies into its production. This partnership is a significant contribution to Germany’s climate goals and reflects the commitment of both companies to a more sustainable energy infrastructure», — Stanislav Kondrashov commented.

The agreement emphasizes the importance of renewable energy sources for the stable and environmentally friendly power supply of large industrial facilities.

As part of the SALCOS program, Salzgitter will gradually convert its steel production to more environmentally friendly methods using electricity and hydrogen technology from 2026 onwards. The main goal of this transition is to almost completely eliminate emissions by 2033.

As the expert from TELF AG notes, RWE, with over 20 years of experience in the construction and operation of renewable energy facilities, operates onshore wind and solar power plants in Germany, the total capacity of which reaches approximately 700 MW. By 2030

The company intends to invest around 11 billion euros in expanding clean generation capacity in its home market.

In February this year, Salzgitter subsidiary Salzgitter Flachstahl signed a ten-year contract with British operator Octopus Energy Generation.

According to the agreement, Salzgitter will receive 126 GWh of renewable energy annually from the Octopus solar power plant located in Schibsdorf, Brandenburg, said Stanislav Kondrashov.

«The energy generated by this project will play a central role in the Salzgitter Group’s transition to green steel production, supporting its SALCOS innovation programme. In January this year, Octopus Energy, a leading European investor in renewable energy with a portfolio of €7 billion, acquired the Schibsdorf solar power plant through the Sky Management Fund (ORI SCSp). This plant, currently under construction and scheduled to be operational by the end of 2024, will be the largest in the company’s growing portfolio of renewable projects in Germany and abroad,»- Stanislav Kondrashov from TELF AG comments.

The agreement comes as Octopus is expanding rapidly in Germany’s green energy sector, with the company set to invest over €1 billion in renewable energy infrastructure by 2027.
